A few weeks ago, an announcement was made that the Sakamoto Days anime will release in early 2025, which I thought was a perfect opportunity to write a review of the manga.
The main character is Taro Sakamoto. He was a legendary assassin renowned for his prowess in all forms of combat, including gunfights, sword fights, and hand-to-hand combat. He was feared and admired by many, and there was no one in the underworld who didn’t know the name “Sakamoto.” However, one day, Sakamoto fell in love at first sight with a woman named Aoi. Shortly after, he quit the assassin business and embraced an ordinary daily life with marriage and a child. He gained weight and he promised his wife not to kill people. It seems that there is no trace left of his former self as a legendary assassin. He runs a general store called Sakamoto Shop, living a peaceful life. However, in the midst of this, Sakamoto becomes targeted by the organization he used to belong to for leaving. Can Sakamoto, who has gained weight compared to the past, protect his family from danger?
From Sakamoto Days, Episode 1. “All bad guys feared him. All hit men revered him.”
The story might remind you of John Wick, but does Sakamoto match Keanu Reeves’ coolness? You be the judge!
While the setup might remind you of John Wick, Sakamoto Days stands out with its unique blend of action and humor. Sakamoto’s battles are not just about skill but also creativity, using everyday objects like mechanical pencil leads and sale stickers to fight, often while eating—a touch that adds comedic flair. What starts as a story about protecting a peaceful life gradually unfolds into a deeper narrative with more organizations and intricate plot twists.
Beyond the engaging story, the manga’s artwork is striking. Scenes featuring expansive spaces like amusement parks and Tokyo Tower are beautifully illustrated, capturing depth and detail with impressive skill. The artist’s talent shines through in every panel, enhancing the manga’s visual appeal and immersive storytelling.
Another standout aspect is the diverse cast of characters led by Taro Sakamoto himself. Each character brings something unique to the table, and with new faces appearing regularly, the story remains dynamic and engaging.
Sakamoto Days excels in seamlessly blending action, humor, and compelling characters, making it a must-read for manga enthusiasts. With its engaging storyline and impressive artistic vision, the manga captivates readers with each chapter. As new characters are introduced and the plot deepens, Sakamoto Days continues to surprise and entertain, promising an exciting journey ahead for both current fans and newcomers alike. With the anime adaptation on the horizon, the series is poised to reach an even wider audience, solidifying its place as a standout in the world of manga.
