“BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita” unfolds as a boys’ love comedy, spotlighting the chemistry between two actors who have just learned they will star in the live-action adaptation of a wildly popular BL manga. Among the cast is Hajime Aoyagi, a talented former child actor whose career hasn’t seen much luck in recent years, juxtaposed with the charismatic and rising star, Yuichiro Akafuji. Aoyagi finds himself apprehensive about his new role due to Akafuji’s distant demeanor. Despite his attempts at an introduction, Aoyagi is met with Akafuji’s aversion. Little does he know, Akafuji harbors an overwhelming affection for him, struggling to look at Aoyagi’s face.
BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimasta, Episode 2. English translation: “This past week, I tried to get used to seeing Hajime Aoyagi in past dramas, movies and stage performances, but seeing him in person is something else entirely!”
To generate buzz for the drama, the producer playfully suggests that Aoyagi and Akafuji live together. Driven by a fervent desire for the show’s success, Aoyagi agrees to the producer’s suggestion. Akafuji tries to hide his emotions towards Aoyagi, while Aoyagi makes an effort to get along with Akafuji, leading to an awkward cohabitation. Aoyagi’s earnestness and diligence make him likable, contrasting with Akafuji’s comically intense otaku devotion. Many scenes unfold with Akafuji saying or suggesting absurd things, but Aoyagi interprets them as part of character preparation. Thus, there are many miscommunications and misunderstandings, but their bond deepens as time goes on.
Although mainly comedic, it’s also a love story. Aoyagi and Akafuji’s relationship maintains a charming innocence throughout the story. The dynamic between their managers adds depth, with some readers even wishing for a spin-off featuring them.
Interestingly, the live-action adaptation debuted in Japan in late 2023, creating a delightful meta twist. The manga, originally depicting the lives of live-action actors, now has its own live-action counterpart. This full-circle evolution adds to its allure. While I’ve only caught the first episode, the actor portraying Akafuji brings a refreshing humor, making it a promising watch.
Sadly, currently, there’s no official English translation of the manga, nor is the live-action drama available in the United States. However, with the drama’s release, hopes are high for an English manga release. Here’s to wishing it into fruition…
